Mondia whitei, also known as white ginger, is a truly magical African herb with a wide range of uses. It is a perennial climbing plant that grows from a tuberous rootstock and is native to southern Africa. The roots of this plant have a taste similar to ginger or licorice, with a hint of vanilla. The foliage is beautiful, with heart-shaped leaves and flowers that have five purplish cream petals forming the base of two small stars.
The fruit is large and woody, containing numerous seeds. Mondia grows best in tropical and subtropical habitats in forested and forest areas. It can be found in several places in its native African environment, including Sudan, Senegal, Swaziland, Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Mondia has been heavily exploited for both commercial and livelihood use and is considered endangered.
Mondia has many medicinal uses, including as an aphrodisiac, antidepressant, galactagogue, fertility medication, and for treating malaria, postpartum bleeding, urinary tract infections, jaundice, headache, paralysis, epileptic seizures, vomiting, and coughs. Studies have provided scientific evidence that supports the traditional uses of mondia. Efforts are being made to increase the (commercial) cultivation of Mondia, protect wild populations and create a sustainable market for it. This magical African herb is an excellent garden theme for providing a shady area and can be used for many medicinal purposes.
