Mukombero (Mondia whitei) is an herb native to western Kenya that has been used for centuries to manage more than 60 health problems. It is most valued for its aphrodisiac properties, which are achieved by eliminating fats and cholesterol from the veins of the male genitals. This leads to the cleansing and detoxification of the reproductive system, resulting in increased blood flow to the genitals. Studies have also shown that mukombero can improve students' memory, rapid learning and retention capacity, as well as increasing alertness and energy.
Mukombero powder is certified by KEBS and is a systemic, natural remedy with no side effects. It is rich in bioactive medicinal compounds such as sterols, tritapenes, alkanoids, saponins, tarnines, flavanoids, alkanoids, glycosides, phenols and terpenoids. It is also full of proteins, minerals such as magnesium, iron, zinc and calcium, and vitamins. In Africa, mukombero is chewed and the sap is swallowed as an aphrodisiac.
Women who use it consistently have reported alleviation of menopause-related symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, depression, vaginal dryness, decreased sexual desire, weight gain, insomnia and hair loss. In Zimbabwe it is known as vuka-vuka (shona for 'wake up') due to its medicinal value. Mukombero also regulates every type of immune cell including natural killer cells, macrophages, T cells and B cells. Mukombero powder can be taken in a variety of ways depending on the desired effect.
For general health benefits it can be taken orally with water or juice or added to food or smoothies. For libido-stimulating effects it can be taken with warm milk or honey. For menopausal symptoms it can be taken with warm water or tea. It can also be applied topically to the skin for relief from skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.
