Mondia whitei is a medicinal plant that has been used since ancient times as an aphrodisiac. Recent studies have suggested that it may have the potential to alter male fertility by affecting sperm quality. An aqueous extract of Mondia whitei was administered in vitro to human sperm and motility parameters were evaluated. The results showed that Mondia whitei significantly improved total motility and progressive motility in a time-dependent manner.
These findings may pave the way for the use of Mondia whitei, especially in men affected by asthenozoospermia. The inhibition of this isoenzyme increases the reserves of cGMP, the second messenger of nitric oxide and a mediator of penile vasodilation, which relaxes smooth muscle cells in the corpus cavernosum and increases blood flow to the cavernous spaces. The observed increase in testicular protein content and weight may be the result of the action of testosterone. In Malawi, gondolose is believed to promote sexual arousal, improve sexual performance, increase sensitivity, and cure erectile dysfunction in men.
The effects of Mondia whitei on the male reproductive system have been thoroughly investigated. Studies have shown that chronic treatment of rats with Mondia whitei induced a significant increase in serum and testicular testosterone levels, testicular protein content and sperm density. It has been reported that Mondia whitei has the ability to reduce the contraction of the corpus cavernosum tissue of guinea pigs, stimulated by alpha-adrenergically, corpus cavernosum tissue of guinea pigs, thus relaxing the muscular11. This review seeks to shed more light on the functions of Mondia whitei as an aphrodisiac based on available scientific evidence. Mondia whitei can be used as an alternative medicine in vivo in the treatment of men affected by asthenozoospermia (lower than the reference value for motility) and erectile dysfunction.
As an aphrodisiac for the treatment of impotence and infertility, men eat the root bark or drink the aqueous extract of Mondia whitei. In conclusion, this study suggests that Mondia whitei may be effective in increasing male fertility by improving sperm quality. It has been shown to increase serum and testicular testosterone levels, testicular protein content and sperm density. Furthermore, it has been reported to reduce the contraction of corpus cavernosum tissue, thus increasing blood flow to the cavernous spaces. These findings support its traditional use as an aphrodisiac and suggest that it may be beneficial for men affected by asthenozoospermia and erectile dysfunction.
